Migrating to the Cloud in 2024: Everything You Need to Know

December 29, 2023

Reasons to move to the cloud

As we saw in previous posts, Migrating to the cloud improves operational efficiency and reduces costs by minimizing the friction between on-premises technologies and decentralized platforms. It also helps avoid unnecessary spending on external support and reduces downtime. The result? A significant improvement in customer experience and employee productivity. Now let’s see how these benefits impact different areas of a business.

Three key areas where migration generates significant benefits

  1. Costs The cloud allows for controlling and optimizing expenses with tools that help manage, predict, and analyze the costs of each resource. Additionally, it allows for choosing between different pricing models and pay-as-you-go options.
  2. Government The cloud requires careful planning and knowledge transfer to ensure that each environment meets regulatory requirements. It also provides tools and services that make it easier to manage and monitor compliance efficiently.
  3. Safety: The cloud provides resources and services that enable comprehensive security management. It offers tools that align with data protection best practices and allow for the control of access to data and applications. It also provides encryption solutions and continuous monitoring to detect and respond to potential threats.

In short, migrating to the cloud offers not only economic benefits but also a robust governance framework and a more secure infrastructure. These factors ultimately make it an attractive option for many companies seeking to streamline their operations and improve their security posture.

But… if the cloud offers so many benefits, why is there often reluctance to migrate?

The answer to this question is more straightforward than it seems: concerns about migration stem from a lack of understanding of the process, fears of disruptions to critical operations, and uncertainty regarding the handling of sensitive data. However, strategic planning and a thorough assessment of needs and requirements are essential to addressing these concerns. Let’s examine these points in detail.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Migration Strategy

To determine the most appropriate migration strategy, you must consider the current organizational context, the state of the local infrastructure, and the level of regulatory compliance. However, there are other factors to take into account.

Points to Things to consider when migrating to the cloud and choosing a suitable provider:

  • Assessment of knowledge and experience: Before embarking on a migration, it is crucial to assess the level of knowledge and experience of the team responsible for carrying out the process. This involves determining whether the team has the technical skills necessary to understand cloud requirements, handle unexpected events, and effectively manage resources in the new infrastructure.
  • Analysis of the current organizational environment: A thorough understanding of the current organizational environment is essential for identifying the company’s specific needs. This includes assessing existing applications, on-premises infrastructure, and business processes to determine which resources are critical, which can be easily migrated, and which require further adjustments.
  • Assessment of current infrastructure and applications: It is important to conduct a detailed analysis of the existing infrastructure and commonly used applications to determine whether they are compatible with a cloud environment.
  • Requirements analysis: At this point, it is necessary to identify and understand the company's specific requirements in terms of performance, security, scalability, and availability. This will help define the migration objectives and select the most suitable cloud platform.
  • Compliance with laws and regulations: Each business must be able to ensure that the migration complies with relevant norms and regulations. Companies must make sure that the chosen platform meets the security and privacy standards required by the laws and regulations applicable to their industry.

 Migration Strategies

As we have seen, before defining a migration strategy, it is necessary to adopt a phased, step-by-step approach to help ensure a successful transition. This involves considering aspects such as assessing the environment, selecting applications to migrate, and creating a detailed migration plan.

In this way, the 7Rs model (Retire, Retain, Rehost, Relocate, Repurchase, Replatform, Refactor) provides a useful framework for determining how each application or service will be moved to the cloud. Each «R» represents a different approach to migrating applications and services, allowing for a more precise choice of the most appropriate strategy for each specific case.

  1. Withdraw

This strategy involves identifying and removing applications, services, or data that are no longer needed or have become obsolete. This could include removing unused applications, legacy systems that are no longer supported, or obsolete data that no longer provides value.

  1. Retain

Under this strategy, it is decided to keep certain applications or components in their current location, possibly due to legal restrictions, prohibitive migration costs, or because the application would not benefit significantly from moving to the cloud.

  1. Re-host

This strategy involves moving existing applications to a new cloud infrastructure without making significant changes to their architecture. It is a simple and straightforward migration that does not require any changes to the application's code or structure.

  1. Relocate

Here, applications are relocated and slightly reconfigured to take advantage of the cloud's specific capabilities. This may involve minor adjustments to the configuration to improve the performance or efficiency of the cloud infrastructure.

  1. Buy back

Instead of migrating an existing application, a new cloud-based application is purchased that provides the same functions or services as the previous one. This option is ideal when there is a cloud solution that offers better features or lower costs.

  1. Replatform

This strategy involves making significant changes to the application to adapt it to the cloud platform. It may involve rewriting or reconfiguring important parts of the application to take advantage of the specific benefits of digital environments.

  1. Refactor or rearchitect

This strategy involves a significant review and redesign of the application architecture to optimize it for the new cloud environment. It may involve rebuilding the application using cloud-native services, which provide greater scalability, flexibility, and efficiency.

Stages of cloud migration

Each approach has its advantages and challenges. Choosing the right strategy for each specific application will depend on several factors, such as business objectives, application complexity, costs, and the time available for migration.

Migration Execution

It's time to start the move. Let's look at the necessary steps to do it effectively.

Detailed planning with the cloud team: Before beginning the migration, it is crucial to set clear objectives, identify the applications and data to be migrated, and create a detailed timeline. The planning should also address risk management and include a contingency plan to address potential issues.

Resource and Capability Evaluation You must ensure that the cloud team has the necessary technical and human resources to carry out the migration efficiently. This could include training staff or hiring a team of external experts.

Selecting the appropriate migration strategy: As we saw in the previous point, the migration strategy that best suits the organization's needs must be selected, thus minimizing downtime.

Incremental migration: Incrementally migrating applications and data to the cloud reduces downtime and minimizes the risk of data loss.

Extensive testing: Rigorous testing must be performed before, during, and after the migration to identify issues and ensure everything functions correctly in the new environment.

Data Management  It is essential to have strategies in place to safeguard the data. This may include backing up data before migration and real-time data synchronization throughout the process.

Constant monitoring Cloud infrastructure performance must be monitored in real time. This allows issues to be identified and addressed proactively.

Staff training: Teams must be trained to work on the new cloud platform and be aware of best security and operational practices in these environments.

Effective communication: Users and stakeholders should always be informed about the migration and potential downtime. Open and transparent communication is crucial for managing expectations and minimizing issues.

Detailed documentation: Every step of the migration must be recorded. This facilitates troubleshooting and allows for detailed review once the migration is complete.

Steps to Take After Migration

We did it! We’re now in the cloud. Now it’s time to optimize our systems, establish monitoring and management processes, and enjoy the flexible scalability, secure storage, and countless benefits these platforms offer. However, keep in mind that every organization is unique and has its own specific needs. That’s why migrating to the cloud is a complex process that varies depending on the context and requires careful planning. Fortunately, the cloud migration process is flexible and adaptable to any structure. However, it requires hard work that must be carried out in stages. From assessing your digital assets to conducting complex security tests, migrating to the cloud will involve every department in an organization. The result?
